Understanding Bed Bug Infestations
If you discover bed bugs in your apartment, your first question may be: how will you ever get rid of them for good? Although bed bugs can be difficult to eliminate, the good news is that with the right measures and professional guidance, they can be eradicated.
Bed bugs most commonly breed in beds but can spread to other areas. Contrary to popular belief, they are not caused by poor hygiene. They infest clean and cluttered homes alike, although clutter can make detection and treatment more challenging by providing more hiding spots.
Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation
- Waking up with bites, welts, or rashes, often appearing in clusters.
- Dark spots or blood droplets on mattresses, pillows, or bedding (bed bug waste products).
- Visible eggs, molted skins, or live insects. Keep in mind that adult bed bugs and especially nymphs can be difficult to spot.
Note: If you notice any of these signs, contact a pest control professional to confirm the infestation.
Steps to Take After Identifying Bed Bugs
1. Notify Your Landlord or Property Manager
Report the infestation immediately. Bed bugs can spread to neighboring units, so early notification helps management coordinate a building-wide response and hire a pest control specialist.
2. Contact an Exterminator or Pest Control Company
While do-it-yourself methods exist, professional treatment is the most reliable solution. Don’t worry—bed bugs won’t multiply exponentially in the short time it takes to hire qualified help.
3. Clean and De-Clutter
Although you can’t eliminate the infestation alone, cleaning can reduce bed bug numbers and limit their spread:
- Carefully transport all bedding and infested fabrics to the dryer.
- Dry on high heat for at least 30 minutes to kill bed bugs.
- Wash and re-dry after the initial heating cycle.
4. Cover Your Mattress
Purchase a bed bug-proof mattress cover that encases the entire mattress. This traps any bed bugs inside and prevents new ones from getting in.
5. Choose Your Sleeping Arrangement Carefully
It may be uncomfortable, but if possible, continue sleeping in your bed until treatment is completed. Moving to another room could spread the infestation further throughout your home.
