How to Prepare for your Bed Bug Treatment

Follow this preparation checklist to get your home ready for pest treatment. Learn essential pre- and post-treatment steps to ensure success and prevent re-infestation.

To achieve the best results, it’s crucial to carefully follow the preparation steps below. Clutter, debris, and unchecked hiding spots can reduce the effectiveness of treatment and increase the risk of re-infestation.

Note: You must vacate the premises for 4 hours from the start of treatment. Pets—including birds, rabbits, hamsters, cats, dogs, and small fish bowls—must be placed in an untreated room or removed from the home. For large aquariums, cover the tank tightly with plastic.

Preparation Checklist

Living Room

  • Move all furniture and items at least 60 cm (24 inches) away from walls.
  • Clean and vacuum under all furniture.
  • Do not place small items on couches or other furniture.
  • Wash pillowcases, blankets, area rugs, and carpets in hot water. Dry on high heat for at least 30 minutes.
  • After washing, place clean items in new plastic bags. Keep bags sealed until treatment is complete.
  • Sweep or vacuum the entire living room before treatment.

Bedrooms

  • Move all furniture and items 60 cm (24 inches) away from walls.
  • Clean and vacuum under beds, dressers, and other furniture.
  • Place small items in closed drawers or storage containers. Keep surfaces clear.
  • Remove all bedding. Place sheets, pillowcases, and blankets in plastic garbage bags marked “To Wash.”
  • Wash all clothing and linens in hot water. Dry on high heat for at least 30 minutes.
  • Place all cleaned items in new plastic bags. Keep sealed until after treatment.
  • Do not return clean sheets and bedding to beds until treatment is complete.
  • Sweep or vacuum all bedrooms before treatment.

Closets and Storage Rooms

  • Remove all items from closet floors in every room.
  • In storage areas, move items (bikes, toys, toolboxes, exercise equipment) 60 cm (24 inches) away from walls.
  • Sweep or vacuum closet floors and storage rooms before treatment.

After Treatment

  • Do not wash floors around walls or windows for 4 weeks.
  • Wash bedding at least every 6 days (or run items through a dry cycle) for the next 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Sweep or vacuum floors daily for 1 week.
  • If a mattress cover is used, do not remove it.
  • Unseal clean plastic bags containing blankets, sheets, and laundry only after treatment.
  • Return furniture and items to their original positions.
  • Important: If any bags marked “dirty laundry” or “to be washed” remain, do not open them. Remove and wash items as soon as possible.
