Identifying and Dealing with Mosquito Breeding Grounds

      By Tyler Clapp

With spring coming, we can also look forward to hotter temperatures and warmer climates. But this comes also with the added cost of more mosquito bites and infestations, with the pests being common this time of year. Aside from giving irritating bites, mosquitos can also transmit deadly viruses like West Nile virus, malaria and yellow fever. To stop these pests in their tracks, here are a few handy tips to help you manage your mosquitos.

      Tip #1: Location, location, location

Mosquitos like to breed where there’s still water for them to do so. This can include a variety of locations including, but not limited to: flower pots, ponds, bird baths, puddles, rainwater barrels, empty tires, ditches and heavy shaded areas. Any area, even a single water bottle cap filled with water, can become a breeding ground because mosquito eggs are so small.

      Tip #2: Do Some Housecleaning

If possible, try to remove the sources where mosquitoes breed, such as cleaning up a backyard overflowing with long weeds or throwing out empty tires.

      Tip #3: Watch Your Water

If you cannot remove those breeding grounds, try covering them up. Keep rainwater barrels covered with a fine mesh fabric to ensure water can flow in but not mosquito eggs. If you have a birdbath, attach a small pump to keep the water moving OR regularly schedule the water to be replaced. You can even scan through your garden and see if there’s any plants that tend to store water.
